POINTS SHARED IN ANFIELD

Liverpool and Tottenham were forced to settle for a point each after a thrilling 2-2 draw at Anfield.
A fine strike from Sami Hyypia rescued a point for Liverpool, although it was far from the best goal of the game after stunning first half efforts from Erik Edman and Luis Garcia. Robbie Keane restored Spurs' advantage after the break and before Hyypia's equaliser Steven Gerrard blazed a penalty wide.

Tottenham handed a debut to Matt Dawson in the centre of their defence, while Jermain Defoe started from the bench. Liverpool, fresh from their Champions League success, resorted to three centre-backs with Pellegrino coming into the side.

The visitors, who are chasing a Uefa Cup place, started well with some fine, controlled passing, but their opening goal came out of nothing. A cleared corner came to Edman, who was fully 40 yards from goal when he smashed a superb strike into the top corner to leave Jerzy Dudek stunned.

Martin Jol's side continued to play the better football, but as the first half reached its conclusion Liverpool picked up their game and on 41 minutes they were level. Garcia left Paul Robinson helpless with a 25-yard curling shot, but minutes later Robinson was at his best to keep out Fernando Morientes' powerful header.

After the break Liverpool were clearly on top, but against the run of play Keane's deflected header from Fredi Kanoute's fine cross restored Tottenham's advantage.

The lead was almost short lived as Michael Carrick gave away a penalty for a trip on Gerrard, but the midfielder fired the resulting spot-kick wide having sent Robinson the wrong way.

Straight down the other end Kanoute shot over with a great chance to score a third for Tottenham and it was to prove costly as Hyypia's stunning volley gave Rafael Benitez's side a share of the points.

Both teams had late chances to win the match with Spurs' Simon Davies denied by Dudek and Gerrard denied by the post.
